Below is a detailed program for the face to face workshop ‘Introduction to Geographical Information Systems’ which will be held from December 3 until December 5 2013 in Antwerp. This workshop is available to EDENext participants. Places are limited and priority will be given to those nominated by their EDENext group leaders. Block 1: Introduction to the course
Participants introduce themselves:
- their research and
- why they enrolled for this course
- what are their expectations of the course
- Lecturers are introduced
- Course approach is explained
- Workshop program is explained
- Short introduction to the different GIS-software (ArcGIS, Manifold, Idrisi, Erdas, …) and motivation for using QGIS in this course
Tuesday 14:30 – 17:00
Block 2: Introduction to QGIS
- run QGIS on their personal laptops;
- understand the different parts of the QGIS interface;
- manage to open some vector files and change their appearance;
- can load and enable plugins;
- have a general understanding of how the QGIS open source initiative compares with commercial GIS software.

Block 3: Projection Systems
- understand the different coordination reference systems;
- understand when to work with projected data;
- are able to handle projection problems.
- assign a missing geographic coordinate system;
- convert a geographic coordinate system to a projected coordinate system;
- make area calculations in a projected coordinate system.

Block 4: Data formats & sources
- understand the vector data format (shapefiles);
- understand the raster data formats (resolution, header, file size in relation to resolution);
- advantages/disadvantages of vector and raster data;
- are able to cope with different formats in QGIS;
- are able to find GIS data on the internet;
- are able to explore a geo database;
- basic steps for data standardization and cleaning;
- understand meta-data.

Block 5: Geo-processing of Vector Data
Participants can perform basic vector geo-processing
Perform the following operations using a set of data:

Block 6: Recapitulation GIS exercises
Participants refresh their GIS knowledge from the workshop.
Block 7: Working with tabular data
- convert tabular data into a shapefile;
- link tabular data with GIS data based on a common field.
Block 8: Google Earth
- use Google Earth as a data source;
- delineate vector data (points and polygons) using Google Earth;
- export and import the vector data in GE and QGIS.
Block 9: Create Raster Data
- make an interpolation;
- make a distance calculation.
Block 10: Perform Raster operations
- classify surface rasters into thematic rasters,
- perform a raster calculation (crosstabulation);
- combine information of multiple rasters;
- perform a simple multi-criteria decision analysis.
Block 11: Epidemiological Analysis
- calculate and visualize epidemiological data;
Block 12: Data preparation & Sampling Strategy
- retrieve raster information (pixel values) for a point layer;
- design a stratified random sampling;
- prepare their own data set.
